The coming weekend will see Venezuelans head to the polls to elect their president. Although we have expressed our scepticism at the prospect of the opposition candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski unseating Chávez as president, the odds of this h

appening come October 7 seem to have improved markedly in recent months. Chávez continues to enjoy considerable popular support among Venezuelans, and only months ago his re-election bid appeared little more than a formality. However, concerns about his health and the emergence of what appears to be a unified opposition movement behind Capriles suggest that alternative scenarios to a Chávez victory merit our attention. Mark Schaltuper, Head of Country Risk Americas, is joined by Elijah Oliveros, Venezuela analyst, to look at the likely outcomes of the election, which is less than a week away.
